How to Build a Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Team

A balanced Pokémon Scarlet and Violet team is easier to build when you start with roles and type coverage instead of six favorite Pokémon picked independently.

Start with a clear core

Choose one or two Pokémon you want to use, then identify what threatens them. Add teammates that handle those threats and create opportunities for the core to attack safely.

Cover roles, not just types

A practical team usually needs damage, speed control, defensive switching, and at least one way to handle setup or hazards. Six different types do not automatically provide these roles.

Avoid stacking the same weaknesses. Two Pokémon sharing a weakness can be manageable, but repeated weaknesses make it easy for one opposing type to pressure the whole team.

Test the final six

Review each Pokémon's defensive matchup, then look for types that hit multiple members super effectively. The comparison tool can show base stats and shared weaknesses side by side before you commit to a final lineup.

Frequently asked questions

How many Pokémon should a team have?

A standard party has six Pokémon. During the story, you can rotate additional Pokémon as you discover which roles and types your team needs.

Should a team use six different types?

Not necessarily. Type diversity helps, but roles, moves, abilities, and avoiding shared weaknesses are equally important.
